Throwback Summer Songs of the ’90s

It’s “TBT” (Throwback Thursday) and there’s only a few weeks of summer left! SO….in honor or TBT, I figured I’d post all the the awesome Summer hits of the ’90s. Join me as we walk down memory lane…

“Vision of Love” – Mariah Carey (1990)

I was only 2 years old at the time this song was released. But when I got older and actually remember listening to all of Mariah’s hits, I loved this track. If I’m driving (alone) in the car and this pops up on my iTunes shuffle, you bet I’ll be belting out those pipes. I miss old school Mariah…

“(Everything I do) I Do It For You” – Bryan Adams (1991)

Before Stewie Griffin of “Family Guy” made his own spoof cover to this song, there was Bryan Adams. He was one of my favorite soft rock singer/songwriters from the ’80s and ’90s. He had the smoothest voice and such heartfelt ballads. So obviously this summer ballad wasn’t any different and #1 on Billboard, back in 1991. And I still love it!

Here’s a snapshot from Stewie Griffin’s music video. lol

“Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix A Lot (1992)

This song doesn’t have the most appropriate content, but hey, it was the summer hit of 1992. Sir Mix A Lot may have been a one hit wonder, but at least he released one of the biggest songs of the decade. EVERYONE knows this song (even if you don’t like it!) Even Nicki Minaj sampled this song for her “Anaconda” single.

And who could forget the FRIENDS scene where Ross and Rachel are singing this song to their baby girl, Emma! Classic.

“That’s The Way Love Goes” – Janet Jackson (1993)

This is one of my favorite Janet songs. It’s so fun, sexy, and cool…so I can see why this was a hit back in ’93. You’ll even find a cameo from Jennifer Lopez, back when she was a fly girl on “In Living Color.”

Another Fun fact: ‘Nsync recorded a cover of this song, which (in my opinion) is just as awesome as the original. They debuted their video during MTV’s Janet Jackson Icon Special. Enjoy 🙂

“Stay (I Missed You)” – Lisa Loeb (1994)

This had that classic ’90s pop/alternative sound. It’s not the most entertaining video, since all you see is Lisa and her cat in an empty loft. But this was everyone’s guilty pleasure. As sappy as this song was, everyone secretly enjoyed it. 😉

 “Waterfalls” – TLC (1995)

One of TLC’s best singles and such a deep song, too! UGH, what happened to my good R&B jams?? I miss you!! Now we’re lucky if the today’s music hits have a good message. And my beautiful “Left Eye”, we miss you girl.

“Macarena” – Los del Rio (1996)

This song was played and danced at EVERY PARTY! Birthdays, Sweet Sixteens, Weddings, you name it. No one knew what Macarena meant or what they were singing about, but who cared. “Hey Macarena. AH- AY!”

“MMMBop” – Hanson (1997)

Another chorus that didn’t make sense but it was such a good summer jam! I wasn’t a huge Hanson fan myself, but I loved that these brothers wrote their own music and played their own instruments. They were like the modern day Beatles (not really, but close.) And all my friends were in love with them!!

“The Boy Is Mine” – Brandy & Monica (1998)

R&B was HUGE in the ’90s, so whoever came up with the idea of making these two ladies collaborate with each other, was a GENIUS. My girlfriends and I were obsessed with this song. We still bust this out whenever we have a random Karaoke night. lol And you really believed that these chicks were fighting over a dude just by watching the sass in this video. I love it.

“Genie In A Bottle” – Christina Aguilera (1999)

Christina’s first big hit and the beginning of the Britney & Christina rivalry. I had this album on a CASSETTE TAPE before buying the CD. And now CD’s are ancient. **SIGH**

And I know I’m getting old when I’m hating on the younger generations for covering this song. But seriously, Dove Cameron & Disney really did butcher the song. But my little cousins love the remake! 🙁

Awesome TV Moms From the ’90s

I’m a soon-to-be mommy and have been daydreaming on the kind of mommy I will be to my baby boy. While I daydream, I can’t help but to archive and relive all my ’90s TV mom memories. I am definitely bias when I say this, but ’90s family sitcoms were THE BEST (especially the moms!) We saw such a variety of moms (maybe good and bad). And in honor of these unforgettable matriarchal figures, I’d like to list MY all-time favorite ’90s TV moms.

1. Vivian Banks (the original), Fresh Prince of Bel-air

Vivian Banks

A strong, educated, beautiful black woman. Aunt Viv was the Claire Huxtable for a new generation (and that’s saying something.) I loved her so much that I was NOT thrilled when they replaced her with a different actress. New Viv is not the REAL Vivian Banks! I mean, who could forget that time she showed off her amazing dancing skills and shut down those haters! You go Viv!

2. Amy Matthews, Boy Meets World

Amy Matthews 2

She was the sweetest!! And probably my ideal stay-at-home mom. I always believed her and Allen Matthews kept it real and had a believable, loving marriage. Not only was she a great wife and mom to her husband and kids, but she was even a great mom to Shawn and Topanga! Bravo Amy, bravo.

3. Rebecca Katsopolis (a.k.a. Aunt Becky), Full House                          Aunt Becky

Can you say MILF?! That was one hot mamma! Aunt Becky had the looks, a great job (TV anchor) and a hot husband! She definitely had the whole package. And she still looks great on Netflix’s Fuller House. #BeckyWithTheGoodHair

4. Roseanne, Roseanne

She wasn’t exactly the warmest motherly figure, but honey you had to appreciate her honesty and wit. Her sassy one-liners are what made her an iconic TV mom AND female comedian.

5. Lisa Landry, Sister Sisterlisa landry

O-M-G this woman always had me LOL’ing! I loved everything about her – personality, fashion, and (obviously) humor. It’s too bad her and Ray didn’t end up together…but let’s be honest, she was kinda out of his league. Sorry Ray!

6. Debra Barone, Everybody Loves RaymondDebra Barone

Debra probably had the most patience out of any TV mom. Anyone that can handle nagging in-laws to that degree, deserves some kind of gold medal. Seriously, I don’t know how she did it. Props, Deb!

7. Harriette Winslow, Family Matters

Harriette Winslow

This woman took RBF (Resting B**** Face) to a whole new level. Nonetheless, you couldn’t help but love and respect her. She was genuinely relatable, that I even imagined her being MY mom. She comes in second (after Debra Barone) at being extremely patient. Do I even have to say it…? Hello…Steve Urkell!!

8. Clair Huxtable, The Cosby Show

Clair Huxtable

This woman needs no introduction. But if I can sum her up in two words, then “Dream Mom” it is! The Huxtables were THE family to be and Clair was the glue holding them all together.

I really grew up with these wonderful TV moms and I will carry a little piece of each of them as I embark on my journey of motherhood. 😉
